ATI Celebrates Head Start Awareness Month

ATI has been supporting Head Start programs throughout the country since 1986. We celebrate Head Start Awareness in October for the unwavering efforts Head Start has made in assisting over eight million low-income preschool children and their families.* 

Galileo Pre-K Online supports Head Start efforts to prepare children for kindergarten and beyond by providing a complete and fully integrated assessment, curriculum, and reporting system that links assessment, planning, individualization and program progress. Galileo also provides an estimated measure of what a child has learned in the form of a Developmental Level (DL) score. ATI applies procedures based in Item Response Theory (IRT) to information gained through observational assessment to estimate a measure of child learning. This estimate is presented as the Developmental Level (DL) score. The DL score indicates a child's position on a developmental path and provides information about the capabilities the child has learned as well as the capabilities the child is ready to learn. ATI recently released new research briefs presenting child growth findings which can assist Head Start educators with interpreting DL scores:

Galileo Pre-K Online Receives a New Statewide Approval and Supports Programs Nationwide

ATI announces a new statewide approval for Galileo Pre-K Online in Florida. The Florida Department of Education Office of Early Learning has approved Galileo Pre-K Online as a pre- and post-assessment instrument for assessing children's school readiness. Programs in Florida along with those in Georgia, New York, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania where Galileo is also approved, have the opportunity to choose Galileo Pre-K Online for state-aligned assessment, curriculum, and school readiness.  

Galileo provides a data-driven, standards-aligned approach to the management of learning for children from infancy through age 5. Galileo provides early childhood educators and other stakeholders a complete and fully integrated curriculum, assessment, and reporting system that links assessment, planning, individualization and program progress. Galileo supports multi-method observational assessment including pre- and post-assessment of children with diverse characteristics including English language learners and children with disabilities. Galileo is backed by ATI’s ongoing research program including research designed to establish on a continuous basis the reliability, validity, and psychometric properties of Galileo assessment scales. Galileo’s English and Spanish scales provide reliable and valid information on child progress towards standards mastery and school readiness. New: Galileo G3 Curriculum Activities Expansion for Toddlers

Our Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum now has expanded activity materials for toddlers ages 18 to 36 months, in addition to those previously available for children 3 through 5 years of age.

The activities have been mapped to the Galileo G3 scale goals for 18- to 24-month olds and 2- to 3-year olds. This mapping supports teachers in lesson planning by helping them easily locate activities the children in their classroom are ready to learn. The full range of classroom activities, combined with Galileo reports, offer teachers time-saving tools for incorporating developmentally appropriate learning opportunities into their weekly lesson plans.

Also released as lesson planning resources for teachers are revised scope and sequence documents to be used with children 18 months to 3 years. The documents offer research-based sequencing of the Galileo G3 scale goals over the course of a program year. The scale goals provide the basis for the activities, ensuring that the developmental needs of toddlers are met. The various activities offered as part of the Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum can be presented individually or in a variety of group settings and interest centers.

New Galileo School Readiness Scales for Birth to 3 years

Children acquire capabilities during their formative preschool years that have a profound effect on their successful transition to school as well as on maintaining success while attending school. One of the fundamental goals of ATI is to assist programs in meeting the school readiness needs of children. To help programs target these valued educational goals, ATI has created the Galileo School Readiness Scales.

Now available, in addition to the school readiness scales for 3- through 5-year olds, are school readiness scales designed to document the kindergarten-readiness progress of children ages birth to 3 years. Programs can now report on a child's developmental progression from birth through 5 years of age.

Galileo Pre-K Online G3 Technology Assessment Scale and School Readiness

Technology and School Readiness

Technology has an ever present and evolving place in modern life. The expectations for technological competency are increasing steadily for adults and children alike. Children as young as elementary school age are being expected to use technology to complete assignments and assessments.

Prior to entering kindergarten, children should have some basic experience using technological devices. Some children may be exposed to these devices at home but for others, learning opportunities presented in preschool may be their only exposure to technology.

The Galileo G3 Technology Scale, released in the spring of 2013, was created in response to the needs of programs to track children’s progress towards technological competency.  ATI's early learning experts designed the Galileo G3 Technology Scale by consulting the most current research in preschoolers' use of technology and various state early learning standards for technology. This approach provides an assessment scale which offers comprehensive coverage of state standards for technology while supporting teachers in their provision of developmentally appropriate learning opportunities for children.

2013 Technical Manual for Galileo® Pre-K Online

ATI is pleased to announce that the technical manual for Galileo Pre-K Online was recently revised and published. This technical manual provides an overview of the theoretical background and research underlying the ongoing development of Galileo Pre-K Online from ATI. This document also describes the technical and psychometric properties of Galileo Pre-K Online and the recently revised Galileo G3 assessment scales for infancy to 5 years. Galileo’s approach to assessment is examined as well as how Galileo uses standards-aligned path-referenced scales based on Item Response Theory (IRT) to support users in measuring children’s development while documenting standards mastery. The technical manual addresses how the Galileo assessment scale content is aligned with federal and state standards, and summarizes the research evidence supporting the validity of the content comprising the scales. Detailed information regarding psychometric analyses of the Galileo G3 assessment scales for birth to 5 years is also made available to the reader.

Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum Resources for Teachers

Galileo Pre-K Online is a fully integrated system with assessment, reporting, and curriculum tools. The integration of these powerful tools makes it possible to create a seamless connection between what children are ready to learn and the learning opportunities provided to them. The Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum is available to all programs using Galileo Online. It contains 32 weekly lesson plans, over 500 classroom activities and over 200 at-home activities for families to share with their children.

Recently ATI released a set of resources for teachers using the Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum. These include the Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum Guidebook, the Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum Materials List, and the Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum Storybook List.

The Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum Guidebook is a comprehensive resource which provides teachers instruction for implementing the curriculum along with directions for employing classroom best practices,  creating interest centers in the classroom, and  following Galileo’s research-based scope and sequence.

The Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum Materials List is designed for teachers to use to inventory their classroom. The materials needed for all of the Galileo G3 Activities are listed so teachers can ensure that their classroom interest centers are supplied with needed materials such as manipulatives, art materials, and toys.

The Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum Storybook List provides a list of storybooks which are suggested for use in the Galileo G3 Activities and Storyteller G3 Activities. The list also indicates which books are available in Spanish to support programs with dual language learners.

Each of these documents can be found in the Galileo Pre-K Online Professional Development Forum along with additional resources for using the Galileo Pre-K Online Curriculum.

Galileo G3 Assessment Scales and Activities

The Galileo G3 Assessment Scales for children ages 3-5 are fully articulated to the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework and represent the developmental building blocks that are most important for a child's school and long-term success.

With hundreds of Galileo G3 Activities aligned to the Galileo G3 Assessment Scales, programs have access to a full range of theme-based curriculum options for use in large and small groups and for individual learning opportunities. Galileo offers hundreds of learning activities which are based on findings from many years of ATI research in the field of preschool learning. Because of the valuable role storybooks can play in the development of young learners, many of the Galileo G3 Activities incorporate storybooks either in a primary role in the activity, as an enrichment opportunity, or as a suggested supplement.

ATI and the Head Start Portrait of Child Outcomes

The Head Start Portrait of Child Outcomes (Portrait) is a grass roots initiative with Assessment Technology Incorporated (ATI) in which Head Start programs join together, pool their data, and share information with the public about children's learning and development. The Portrait reflects the 11 Domains and 37 Domain Elements comprising the Head Start Child Development and Learning Framework (Framework) for children three to five years old.

The role of ATI is to continuously analyze and aggregate data gathered by programs and to display the data in reports documenting children's learning and progress on the Domains and Domain Elements. Portrait data are recorded online by Head Start programs and are available in real-time for reporting purposes. Thus, there is a unique opportunity to provide the Head Start community, researchers, policy-makers, and the public with a continuous and changing portrait of outcomes reflecting the course of children's learning throughout the program year.

Head Start programs throughout the nation are already using information on child outcomes in new ways to improve learning. It is the goal of participating programs and the goal of ATI that the information provided through the Head Start multi-state Portrait will be helpful to all of those individuals who are concerned with and dedicated to the challenge of promoting the development of our nation's children.

Galileo Online Pre-K Parent Center

Preschoolers are active and continuously engaged learners finding any environment an appropriate place to explore, discover, and grow. This love of learning bubbles over into all areas of a child’s life. A strong partnership between parents and educators may significantly enhance children’s development by allowing a complimentary approach to learning both at home and in the classroom. The Galileo Pre-K Parent Center offers a dynamic tool that supports a family’s engagement in their child’s educational experience.

The Pre-K Parent Center is a secured area within Galileo Pre-K Online and offers educators a platform to communicate with families through posting notes and lesson plans. Through the center, parents have access to up-to-date information about their child’s learning and classroom experiences. The Center also allows parents to print both At-Home Activities to share with their child and up-to-date reports about his or her developmental progress.  Through the Pre-K Parent Center family involvement and engagement in a child’s education can be supported and monitored. Family involvement in a child’s education is an educational opportunity for the child and an important reporting component for Head Start and Early Head Start programs.

The Galileo School Readiness Scale

Research shows that the social, physical, and cognitive environments that a child is exposed to in the first years of life have a lasting impact on how a child develops. The capabilities that children acquire during their formative preschool years have a profound effect on their successful transition to school as well as maintaining success while attending school. One of the fundamental goals of Assessment Technology Incorporated (ATI) is to assist programs in meeting the school readiness needs of children. To help programs target these valued educational goals, ATI has created the Galileo School Readiness Scale.  

What is the Galileo School Readiness Scale?
The Galileo School Readiness Scale is a new developmental scale that consists of capabilities from the essential areas of learning and development reflected in the Galileo G3 Assessment Scales. The capabilities on this new scale reflect valued school readiness goals, which programs may use to benchmark the progress their children are making in getting ready for successful entry into kindergarten.

How were the goals on the Galileo School Readiness Scale selected?
In choosing which capabilities to include on the Galileo School Readiness Scale, ATI analyzed the specific goals in the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework, various state early learning standards, and Common Core Kindergarten Standards. Those capabilities that were common among the Framework and standards were identified as the agreed-upon essential performance objectives for preschool-age children transitioning into kindergarten.

Once these standards were identified and analyzed, the developmentally sequenced capabilities that a child must learn to achieve these valued goals were determined and then included in the Galileo School Readiness Scale.

How do teachers use the Galileo School Readiness Scale?
The Galileo School Readiness Scale should be used in conjunction with the Galileo G3 Assessment Scales. Since the Galileo School Readiness Scale is made up of selected Galileo G3 Assessment Scale capabilities, a teacher may continue to assess their children on the Galileo G3 Assessment Scales. Once a program has access to the Galileo School Readiness Scale, the G3 capabilities a child has already learned will automatically be documented as learned on the Galileo School Readiness Scale. In the future, as a teacher documents a child’s learning on the Galileo G3 Assessment Scales, the like-capabilities on the Galileo School Readiness Scale will also be updated as learned, meaning no additional work for the teacher.

How do administrators use the Galileo School Readiness Scale?
Administrators may aggregate and analyze Galileo school readiness assessment data at multiple points in a year. Periodic data analysis will determine what progress children are making toward meeting these established goals. Reports such as the Progress Report will illustrate the increase in children’s developmental score from one observation period to next, indicating that there has been a gain in ability. The Developmental Profile, when aggregated, will spotlight the particular school readiness capabilities that children have been attaining, and which might need additional attention.  Administrators may use the Galileo school readiness assessment data to inform continuous program improvements related to curriculum, teaching, instructional strategies, and the professional development of staff. Furthermore, data from this scale provides programs the opportunity to share with parents and the local community children’s readiness for kindergarten.

The Head Start Portrait of Child Outcomes is Expanding

Great news for all Head Start programs utilizing Galileo Pre-K Online. If not already a participant, you are invited to become a participant in the 2011-2012 expansion of the Head Start Portrait of Child Outcomes. The Portrait, initiated several years ago by Head Start programs throughout the nation, is a grass roots initiative in collaboration with Assessment Technology Incorporated (ATI) in which Head Start programs join together, pool their data, and share information with the public. The portrait creates a vehicle to showcase the success of Head Start in promoting children's learning and development and thus to also showcase success in fostering their school readiness skills.

The 2011-2012 Portrait will reflect children's ongoing learning and progress in the 11 Domains and 37 Domain Elements comprising the Head Start Child Development and Learning Framework. Portrait data are automatically recorded online by Head Start programs and are available in real-time for reporting purposes. Thus, there is a unique opportunity to provide the Head Start community, researchers, policy-makers and the public with a continuous and changing portrait of outcomes reflecting the course of children's learning throughout the program year.
