The Galileo Online professional development program includes a variety of topics designed to prepare all users to take full advantage of all that Galileo technology has to offer. We know that flexibility is important, so our professional development team provides a variety of training options. These include on-site large-group professional development sessions at District provided computer labs as well as web-based training through small-group live and recorded webinars, Learning on Demand sessions, pre- and recorded video tutorials, and quick reference guides accessed through the Help Files. 

One of the most popular resources is the complimentary Learning on Demand webinar and video series. Galileo Reporting

The reports found in Galileo provide a wealth of information. Teachers, administrators, and specialists can obtain actionable, real-time data on student learning with Galileo. Reliable and valid assessment results from district-wide benchmark, instructional effectiveness pretests and posttests, end-of-course, computer adaptive, formative, and an array of other Galileo assessments are rapidly available. Report data details student mastery of standards, next steps in the design of instruction to promote learning with continuous tracking of student progress, and forecasting of student performance throughout the year.  

Educators can easily access a variety of reports and act on data that is available from the Galileo Dashboards. Dashboards provide a single location from which to view and interact with curriculum, assessment, and actionable assessment results. This data can quickly inform differentiated instruction decision-making for individual students, classes, and tiered intervention groups based on their skill mastery, standards mastery, and/or pattern of progress.

Galileo Help is Always at Hand

The Galileo Help interface gives users up-to-date information on frequently asked questions about Galileo. When logged into Galileo, users can easily access the interface by clicking the "Help" link in the gold menu bar at the top of any screen.

Once inside the Help utility, users can search for topics by selecting the Contents link or the Search link. Through the Contents link, users may drill down through categories such as Dashboard, Setup, and Assessment to find a topic. Through the Search link, users may search for topics by keyword. Help files often include step-by-step instructions on using the selected feature, links to quick reference guides, printable handouts, and recorded Learning on Demand sessions detailing the different features in Galileo. Plus, the Help files include a glossary which provides a list of terms commonly used in the Help files along with their definition.

Galileo Pre-K Online Receives a New Statewide Approval and Supports Programs Nationwide

ATI announces a new statewide approval for Galileo Pre-K Online in Florida. The Florida Department of Education Office of Early Learning has approved Galileo Pre-K Online as a pre- and post-assessment instrument for assessing children's school readiness. Programs in Florida along with those in Georgia, New York, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania where Galileo is also approved, have the opportunity to choose Galileo Pre-K Online for state-aligned assessment, curriculum, and school readiness.  

Galileo provides a data-driven, standards-aligned approach to the management of learning for children from infancy through age 5. Galileo provides early childhood educators and other stakeholders a complete and fully integrated curriculum, assessment, and reporting system that links assessment, planning, individualization and program progress. Galileo supports multi-method observational assessment including pre- and post-assessment of children with diverse characteristics including English language learners and children with disabilities. Galileo is backed by ATI’s ongoing research program including research designed to establish on a continuous basis the reliability, validity, and psychometric properties of Galileo assessment scales. Galileo’s English and Spanish scales provide reliable and valid information on child progress towards standards mastery and school readiness. ATI provides the following elements to support preschool programs as they make program management decisions, plan learning opportunities, and work towards the achievement of goals including those related to state initiatives. 

• Experience in Standards-Based Assessment and Education: The Galileo G3 scales in English and Spanish are aligned with the Early Learning and Developmental Standards of most states across the country. • Flexible Intuitive Reporting Tools and Immediate Information for Decision-Making and Planning: The Galileo Pre-K Online reporting system and the Online Reporter provide a variety of ready-made, standards-aligned reports that can be generated at several levels of interest as well as the capability to generate customized reports that can meet administration, program, and teacher needs. Unlike results from paper-and-pencil assessments, Galileo data is immediately available for reporting. Users can aggregate and disaggregate large amounts of up-to-the-second data in reports that prompt action by decision-makers from teachers to state department staff. Galileo promotes family engagement via the Parent Center providing access to information about child progress as well as at-home activities in English and Spanish.
• Comprehensive, Customized Professional Development and Training: ATI has a long history of providing excellent online and on-site professional development and training and has trained thousands of early childhood educators across the country. The web-based professional development tutorials offered by ATI enable teachers to reliably conduct observational assessments, record and report on the data, and use the results to provide appropriate learning opportunities. In addition, customized web-based professional development provided by ATI enables technical assistance staff, trainers, and administrators to serve as effective trainers and to conduct quality assurance and compliance reporting.

Counteracting the Summer Slide

Most readers will be familiar with the concept of summer slide in terms of regression of student skills during summer break. In fact, the U.S. Department of Education has a series of blog posts* regarding this topic as well as student resource suggestions from Edutopia**. But let’s turn this around and look at how we can apply this concept to teachers and administrators. Although we will be specifically looking at this in terms of gaining proficiency with Galileo K-12 Online, this could apply to other educational technology.

Ask yourself some questions before you get started: On which system(s) will you focus? How much time will you dedicate to this? What resources will you need? Do you have appropriate access or will you need specialized access to these systems? Are there continuing education credits available? 

Once you have set some goals, you can do a little research to help figure out what resources these systems offer and how to begin your work. In the case of Assessment Technology Incorporated (ATI) Galileo K-12 Online, here are some suggestions: 

• Public web page: ATI offers materials that give a general overview and highlight specific features available in Galileo. There are also videos that offer user-friendly explanations of Galileo features. In addition, there are case studies that highlight how other districts/charters have implemented Galileo along with discussion of their successes and best practices. Lastly, there is a treasure trove of information to be mined from our research documents (e.g., technical documents, research documents, white papers, and FAQs).  
• Support web page: Technical support documentation can sometimes overlap Professional Development (PD) information. ATI offers documentation of system requirements and general use/optimization of Galileo. You can also familiarize yourself with the various support options should you need them in the future. 
• ATI Professional Development Forum: This will likely be your best resource as a user. In the Galileo Professional Development Forum, you can access: quick reference guides on specific features/reports, short videos on how to use Galileo, and previously recorded Learning on Demand sessions that go into more depth on a variety of topics (more on this later). 
• ATI Field Services Coordinator or Professional Development team: Contact ATI’s friendly Field Services Coordinators or PD team so that they can share their wealth of knowledge and experience. Perhaps they can point you to information you seek.
• Learning on Demand: The ATI Professional Development Department offers live online Learning on Demand sessions to assist educators in becoming proficient users of Galileo K-12 Online technology with the goal of enhancing student learning. The sessions occur throughout the year as often as 4 to 5 times per month.  The topics change throughout the year so be sure to check back regularly. Continuing professional development credit is offered for those who register and participate in the live session. The content is also recorded and available for later viewing in the Professional Development Forum. 
• Seminars and conferences: In partnership with various school districts, ATI hosts a number of regional/statewide seminars covering various topics relevant to the educational community. We also participate in a number of conferences and often host discussions/presentations during the conferences. Check our Events page for the latest schedule. 

Hopefully, as you learn more about the systems your district/charter has opted to use, you will be more proficient and ultimately be better equipped to help your students and fulfill your goals. But don’t forget to enjoy your respite from the classroom because fall will be approaching all too soon!

Year-End Review and Preparing for the New School Year

As the end of the school year approaches, it is time for district and charter school administrators to reflect on the past school year and begin planning for the approaching year. To help K-12 school districts with this process, ATI recently hosted a Learning on Demand session titled Year-End Review and Preparing for the New School Year. Topics of this session included:

• Reviewing the past year’s goals for Galileo-use and acknowledging successes and challenges. Special emphasis is placed on highlighting successes and the making of action plans to address challenges.
• Exploring ATI innovations and how these tie into new district initiatives.
• The planning process for next year including determining the testing calendar, the data importation schedule, and desired professional development.

The start of the new school year is always a busy time for ATI’s Professional Development Specialists. We spend many hours on the road working with districts and charter schools to help them prepare for implementing their first Galileo assessment. Once the first assessment of the year is successfully administered, it is time to train staff on how to utilize Galileo’s other components and tools. Many school districts and charter schools ask ATI’s Professional Development Specialist to come out and deliver follow-up, on-site training on:

Year-end reviews shape future planning - have you scheduled yours?

I have learned a lot over the years just by listening to my clients. One way I listen to my clients is during their year-end review discussion.  Although there is regular communication back-and-forth with clients throughout the year, in Field Services we plan for two major discussions during the school year. The first is a Galileo implementation plan discussion held during the start of Galileo use and near the start of each successive year. The second, which serves as the purpose of this writing, is the year-end review discussion.

As the current school year winds down, we have an opportunity to reflect on the past and consider plans for the upcoming year. This discussion is important for a number of reasons. For example, during the year-end review together we:

• review the goals for the year along with successes and challenges that were faced, 
• learn about new initiatives within the district/school and discuss plans for the upcoming school year,
• share information about new features in Galileo, and
• discuss professional development needs and new opportunities.

So contact your Field Services Coordinator at GalileoInfo@ati-online.com or call 800-367-4762 today to setup your year-end review. These discussions can be scheduled in late April or May (after statewide testing) and generally last about an hour or so.

Inter-Rater Reliability

ATI conducted a study of inter-rater reliability on Galileo scales in partnership with three Head Start programs in the state of Ohio. Observations were conducted on three randomly selected children from each of 318 classrooms in these programs.

The following table presents the results of the study indicating adequate correlations between the observations for the two observers.

The means and standard deviations for observations for the two observers are nearly identical. This is consistent with the expectation that observer-measurement error for aggregated data will be low. These results provide evidence of inter-rater reliability for the Galileo scales.

It is important to note though, that inter-rater reliability may vary based on the specific staff members conducting observational assessments as well as well-established phenomena such as observer drift. For this reason, ATI offers inter-rater reliability training designed to assist programs in training staff members to conduct reliable assessments.

Webisode: Integrating Nonfiction in Common Core

In our conversations with users, we have learned that educators have a growing interest in digital professional development opportunities focusing on student engagement and achievement. We at ATI are developing educational webisodes that emphasize the integration of technology and teaching strategies relevant to Common Core with the goal of increasing student involvement in the learning process.

Our latest webisode, Nonfiction in Common Core, introduces a discussion centered on the role of nonfiction reading in high school English language arts curriculum and most specifically, on the question “Does your curriculum meet Common Core’s requirements for nonfiction?” The webisode also shares the steps as outlined in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers curriculum framework on how nonfiction should be integrated.

Community Assessment and Item Banking Initiative

ATI is answering educators’ need for valid, reliable, and fair items and assessments for use in evaluating the instructional effectiveness of teachers in areas not tested on statewide assessments with the Community Assessment and Item Banking Initiative. The initiative provides a way for users to develop and to share within and across districts both assessment items and assessments. As part of the initiative, ATI is assisting in the preparation of educators to develop high-quality items and is providing services related to assessment development and data analysis. New: Webisodes

In our conversations with users, we have learned that schools have a growing interest in digital professional development opportunities for teachers seeking to increase student engagement and achievement. We are developing educational K-12 webisodes that emphasize the integration of technology and teaching strategies relevant to Common-Core- and/or new-science-standards-curricula and to the goal of increasing student involvement in the learning process.

ATI and the New K-12 Science Standards, the first-released webisode, introduces a discussion centering on the new K-12 science standards’ emphasis on modeling throughout the performance expectations. These models are expected to explain, explore, and predict scientific phenomena. The webisode also shares modeling resources available through ATI’s dialogic technology.
