The new Benchmark Performance Levels reporting widget accessible from the Teacher Dashboard summarizes multiple measures of student performance on district benchmark assessments (e.g., mathematics, English language arts, and other subject areas) for your entire class at once. The colorful pie chart and interactive data displays of assessment results can be used to guide instruction, intervention, and enrichment using the Galileo Digital Curriculum Platform and Galileo online lessons (e.g., Dialogs). Benchmark Performance Levels reporting widget highlights follow.

Seminar Recap: An Arizona First - The New Galileo Digital Curriculum Platform in Action

Thanks to all who attended, this informative and timely seminar was a big success. The event, which was co-hosted by Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) and ATI, provided a first-hand look at how Arizona educators are taking the lead in utilizing the teacher-friendly innovations of the new Galileo Digital Curriculum Platform. Attendees viewed presentations from the cohosts and engaged in the "Arizona Round Table Discussion" that included education leaders from CUSD, Crane Elementary School District, and Maricopa Unified School District. The round table participants provided their reasons for adopting the new platform along with discussing their experiences, successes, and next steps.

Positive Impact of Galileo Use in Blended Learning Described in WestEd Report to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Year-End Review and Preparing for the New School Year

It is hard to believe that the end of the school year has arrived. Now that your district is wrapping up the 2015-16 school year, it is the perfect time to reflect on a year of Galileo implementation. It is also time to begin planning for next year.  

ATI recommends that you gather appropriate personnel and staff for a “year-end review.”  In a Year –End Review meeting you may revisit the Galileo goals you establish at the start of the year. Common goals among district implementing Galileo often include:

• administer district-wide assessments in grade K-8 for math, ELA, and science;
• increase teachers use of district-wide testing data for classroom interventions; and 
• incorporate Galileo student performance data into instructional effectiveness plans

Once participants have reviewed the year’s Galileo goals, they may then review the feedback from this year’s implementation, identifying both the challenges and success stories. Utilize this valuable feedback to begin formulating goals for the 2016-17 school year and determine in what ways your implementation plan may be added to and/or modified.

Once the review of the year has occurred, moving onto planning for 2016-17 might include:

• determine the assessment types, frequency, subjects, and for administration;
• determine how you will administer assessments;
• identify new Galileo features you will explore and implement (e.g., Galileo Digital Curriculum Platform) and create a professional development plan to assist in the roll out of these features on your campuses;
• identify staff changes that your team and ATI should be made aware of;
• determine who will be the Galileo Test Coordinator(s); and
• identify new district initiatives that ATI should be notified of such as the implementation of a new Student Information System or textbook adoption.

Galileo Technology Supporting Educators Building a Better World

Since ATI was founded in 1986, our mission has been to create and disseminate technology to promote learning. We have achieved many milestones in our ongoing efforts to provide cutting-edge curriculum, assessment, and reporting tools to promote learning from birth through high school. We’re excited to highlight some of these milestone, but to learn more read our new paper, A Brief History of Galileo Digital Curriculum Technology.

ATI initial work on the development of technology making curriculum available online and integrating curriculum with assessment began just prior to the 21st century. Our early work focused on transforming educational management tasks typically implemented offline to an online environment. Our first patent for an instructional management system integrating curriculum with assessment was filed in 1998 and granted in 1999. Shortly after this initial work, we began an initiative to implement teacher facilitated online instruction and assessment involving multimedia assessment and instructional content. As a result of this work, a second patent involving multimedia instruction offered online using ATI’s Storyteller technology was granted in 2005. 

Following the initial work with multimedia content, ATI introduced the concept of an online Instructional Dialog. Dialogs enabled teachers to create their own online lessons and assignments. In addition, Dialogs provided prebuilt multimedia instructional resources. Shortly after the introduction of Dialogs, ATI introduced Dialog Books. The Dialog Book offered a structure within which to organize instructional content. Each chapter in a book began with chapter objectives based on standards in use by the district. Assessments linked to each chapter provided evidence on what was learned from the book. Instructional Units and lesson plans were also added to the system. The concept of a digital curriculum platform emerged from the early lesson plans and Instructional Units available in Galileo. It also had common features with Dialog Books. Like the books, the Galileo Digital Curriculum Platform provided a structure within which to organize instruction. The platform had the additional advantage of being able to house district curriculums online. The availability of online curriculums supported real-time curriculum delivery of instructional content. The fact that the curriculum was online and linked directly to assessment information opened the way for the creation of dynamic curriculums that could be continuously improved based on consideration of assessment evidence.  

As technology availability and capability have increased, many new features have been added to the platform. This is to be expected. The platform is designed to change. In our view, that is a requirement of 21st century education and educational technology.

The Digital Curriculum Platform is comprised of two integrated components: 1) a series of online Instructional Units defining the scope and sequence of instruction and offering a variety of resources to guide instruction; and 2) within each Unit a series of online Instructional Dialogs enabling the development and delivery of instruction and assessment within each unit. A series of Units can form the complete curriculum for a particular subject and grade. Curriculums built on the platform may include multimedia content, technology-enhanced lessons, assignments, assessments, and tools supporting online synchronous and asynchronous communication between students and teachers.

Because the curriculum platform is fully integrated within Galileo K-12 Online, teachers, specialists and administrators have real-time, time-saving access to Galileo Dashboard reports displaying a continuous portrait of student growth and achievement. Moreover, parents and students have access to curriculum through the Galileo K-12 Online Student-Parent Center. The center is comprised of an array of features designed to increase student engagement in the learning process and provide parents with easy access to information on student learning, curriculum and resources.

ATI Supports Districts and Charters in the Transition to New Statewide Assessments

ATI is taking several measures to assist districts and charters across the nation as they transition to new forms of statewide testing reflecting new rigorous educational standards. For example, some states have contracted with American Institutes of Research (AIR) for statewide testing. Arizona is one such state. This spring, administration of Arizona's Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching (AzMERIT) as the new statewide assessment to measure student ability in English language arts and math took place. ATI is supporting districts and charters in Arizona and other states prepare students for new statewide assessments in a number of ways including:

• Creation of assessment items aligned to Common Core and local state standards and, in many instances, reflective of the technology enhanced (TE) items planned for the online testing environments by AIR and others.
• Development of the Galileo Digital Curriculum Platform that will support districts/charters as they move toward the integration of instruction and assessment called for in current best practices approaches to education. Instructional Dialogs in the Digital Curriculum Platform provide a place for students to respond to new TE item types and to develop expanded test taking skills.
• Creation of district-wide assessments aligned to published test blueprints (e.g., PARCC, SBAC, and AzMERIT) and to district pacing guides.
